Statement on the Use of AI in Wedding Photography

Our Statement On The Rising Use Of AI Technology

The Rise of AI in Photography

The world of photography is undergoing a dramatic transformation, thanks to the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is poised to become a powerful tool that enhances creativity, streamlines workflows, and opens up new avenues for artistic expression.

As wedding photographers we do have to draw a line as to what is acceptable use, and what is not.

For us it is fairly straight forward:

All images you see on our website and social media, are photographs, taken with a real camera.

We will not generate fake images to pretend we have been somewhere or photographed things we have not.

We will only use AI tools, built into photo editing software, to remove objects or persons when they distract from the image or moment, and we will not add objects or people into a photograph.

In this AI world we have started to be asked regularly if this image of an Iceland elopement is AI generated – and no it most certainly is not! This is an original photograph taken by LinaandTom.com

The world of AI is changing rapidly, and here is just some of the ways how.

1. Image Enhancement and Restoration:

  • AI-powered tools can be used to breathe new life into old, degraded photographs. Faded family portraits can be restored to their original vibrancy, or blurry images sharpened with precision.
  • AI can intelligently remove unwanted elements like blemishes, distractions, or even entire objects from images. This opens up a world of possibilities for creative manipulation and compositing..
  • Noise reduction is another area where AI excels. By analysing image patterns, AI algorithms can effectively minimize noise while preserving fine details, resulting in cleaner and more visually appealing images.

2. Creative Tools and Filters for Art:

  • AI-driven filters go beyond simple colour adjustments. They can analyse the composition and subject matter of an image to suggest unique artistic styles, from painterly effects to surreal transformations.
  • AI can even generate entirely new images based on user input. Imagine describing a scene, and AI translating your words into a stunning visual representation.
  • AI can help photographers explore new creative avenues by suggesting alternative compositions, identifying areas of interest, and even predicting the impact of different lighting conditions.

3. Workflow Automation:

  • AI can automate tedious tasks like image sorting, tagging, and cataloguing. This frees up photographers to focus on more creative endeavours, such as capturing and editing their images.
  • AI-powered assistants can help photographers manage their businesses, from scheduling shoots and invoicing clients to analysing market trends and identifying new opportunities.

4. Accessibility and Inclusivity:

  • AI can make photography more accessible to people with disabilities. For example, AI-powered tools can help visually impaired photographers capture and edit images, and can assist in describing and sharing images with others.

The Ethical Considerations:

While the potential of AI in photography is immense, it’s crucial to address the ethical considerations.

  • Authenticity and originality: As AI becomes more sophisticated, it’s important to ensure that images created or manipulated using AI are clearly labelled and that the role of AI is transparent.
  • Bias and fairness: AI algorithms are trained on massive datasets, and if these datasets contain biases, those biases can be reflected in the AI’s output.
  • Environmental concerns: Increasing use of AI is using up more data server space and energy. AI research company Hugging Face found that generating two images with AI could use as much energy as the average smartphone charge.

AI is not here to replace photographers; it’s here to empower them. By embracing these technologies, photographers can unlock new levels of creativity, efficiency, and artistic expression whilst still maintaining their artistic integrity and transparency to their clients. As AI continues to evolve, the future of photography promises to be even more exciting and dynamic.
